Bio

Gregory Lee Padilla is an artist out to capture the essence, the truth, the something that is just beyond the everyday and the ordinary. Though he works in a variety of media, including assemblage and photography, Gregory is primarily a painter. His paintings, according to photographer Baron Norris, "reside somewhere within the realm of expressionism, giving us a glimpse of how he sees the world while maintaining the oneiric quality of half-remembered dreams." In addition to the internal, he also draws directly from his diverse surroundings in Whittier, California. Whether its the town's rolling hills, alleyways, or architectural landscape, it serves as a catalyst that helps to reclaim and recycle his memories while simultaneously speaking to the future.

A recent series of three dimensional works take on a different tone, one that speaks sociologically and anthropologically. Finding and reassembling the discarded, the broken and lost artifacts of his community, Gregory gives voice to these inconsequential treasures. By reassembling these findings, he is in essence a medium who is telling a "new" story by distilling the detritus of the city. In doing so, the artist offers a glimpse into a particular time and place while giving value to what was once worthless.

Gregory attended Whittier College where he obtained his degree in Sociology. He continues to live and work in Whittier, California.
